Japan, 1870-1950RIN
|
JNDA 01-55. The rin is the smallest denomination coin produced in the modern era. The value is 1/10 of 1 sen, so 1/1,000 of a yen. The obverse features a central Imperial chrysanthemum, and the reverse a characters (one over 'rin' character).
Copper. Diameter 15.75 mm. Weight 91 grams.
Copper. Diameter 15.75 mm. Weight 91 grams.
Minted Meiji 6 (1873)- Meiji 17 (1884), but not in years 1878/79/81.
The mintage of 1880 was very small (under 1000). 1892 is listed in the NGC registry set as a 'non-competitive' coin. A few were struck for presentation purposes only and were not intended for circulation. It is not even included in the JNDA as on official entry. Patterns dated 1873 and earlier exist. |
M.8 has two varieties. The more common is 'characters connected', while the 'characters separated' is much more difficult to obtain. As yet, I have not found one. The detail shot is a bit oddly exposed to show the feature. This coin also has a few interesting die cracks.
