Mothers/children
A gallery of many of my favorite images from maternity related medals.
Below are full pictures and varying levels of descriptions of some.

Strike pattern or trial strike unifying test strikes of the obverse and reverse or "two tests of strike brought together", done as a final step before regular minting would begin if I understood correctly. Purchased from a very knowledgable long term seller, who had little information on this one, with the mother/children engraving unlisted in his many references. The medal is signed Roger Fougere (behind the two busts) who was a notable illustrator in the thirties, and is inscribed to Mr. Joseph Ovlion from the 'Casino Stores'. The edge is marked 'bronze' and it measures 80 mm in diameter.

Google-fu in conjunction with a couple translated/untranslated pages reveals that the "Societe des Magasins du Casino" refers to the rather large Casino supermarkets/food distribution conglomerate.
McCartan, Edward (1879-1947). Bronze, 162 grams 7.3 cm. 19th issue of the Society of Medalist series and struck by the Medallic Art Company. From the sculptor: "I have attempted to portray the fortunate position of the American home maker contrasted with her European sister who lives from day to day in a paralysis of fear and hate and regimentation". Reported mintage 943 in bronze and 100 in silver.

One of the more interesting multipart medals out there. The medal is by Kauko Rasanen, a renown Finnish artist and medalist, and celebrates the International Women's Year (helpfully inscribed on the inner parts of the medal). Not only is there an obverse/reverse, but the medal opens to show the pregnant woman with her gravid abdomen. The artist takes it a step further and makes a third portion of medal--with the belly removable showing the fetus including placenta. |
